zaThe South African Medical Research Council (MRC) has the mission to improve the nation’s health and quality of life through promoting and conducting relevant and responsive health research.
The PROMEC Unit (http://www.mrc.ac.za/promec/contents.htm) is a multidisciplinary research team that has made major contributions in the field of mycotoxins and human health over the past 31 years. From the initial aim to identify causative factors possibly involved in the high prevalence of liver cancer in certain population groups in Southern Africa, the emphasis has shifted to studies on the major toxigenic fungi and their mycotoxins associated with maize which forms the staple diet of millions of South Africans. Hence, the main thrust is to address health issues related to food safety, nutrition and cancer. The PROMEC Unit consists of a multidisciplinary research team with internationally acknowledged expertise in Microbiology, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Experimental Carcinogenesis.
