The National University of Río Cuarto is an Argentinean public law entity within the national system of higher education whose aims are to provide instruction, carry out research, and
technical qualification, to produce goods, provide social services, and promote national culture within a framework of ethic values. The University is located in the center of the country, an area
with a vast influence of agriculture and cattle breeding activities.
The University is linked to governmental and private institutions, enterprises and social entities from the Río Cuarto City and the Nation by means of 300 cooperation and mutual
agreements. It is organized into Faculties which are responsible for the organization, administration and realization of educational activities for 20.000 undergraduate students. There are five
Faculties: Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine, Economics, Natural and Exact Sciences Physics and Chemistry, Humanities and Engineering. All of them are set on the University Campus. There are also
special graduate studies at level of Master and PhD degrees organized by the different Faculties and the Graduate School, with 700 graduate students.
At the Faculty of Natural and Exact Sciences Physics and Chemistry in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology research is actively carried out on pathogen and toxigenic fungi and mycotoxins on
cereal grains (wheat and maize) and oily seeds (peanuts, sunflower and soybean) and grapes. The main activities are devoted to reduce the impact of Fusarium and Aspergillus contamination and
mycotoxins through an integrated management.
The research group has maintained collaboration, and continues at present with several research Institutions from Argentina, Europe: such as ISPA (Italy), Cranfield University
(UK), Kansas State University (USA), and Latin America, Guadalajara University (Mexico), Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, Santa Maria Federal University
(Brazil) and University of Republic (Uruguay).
The group is also involved in teaching activities in the area of mycotoxicology through courses for graduate students from Argentina and other Latin American countries on Food Mycology and mycotoxins
and on Fusarium. Also extension activities are carried out devoted to farmers, industry, private and official control laboratories.
